About the Award

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad appreciates the tremendous efforts and professional achievements of its alumni through the Distinguished Alumni Awards (DAA) for their outstanding work in the industry, academia, and research ever since. The nominations are submitted by the past DAA awardees, Senate members and Alumni Chapters through their Presidents. The awardees are finally selected by a committee, chaired by the Director.

Selection Process

Nominations shall be shortlisted by a Screening Committee (SC) to be constituted with the approval of the Director. Shortlisted nominations shall be peer-reviewed by the Standing Committee normally *comprising the* Director as the Chairman, Dean (IRAA), President/Vice- President (ISMAA), One/Two past awardees of DAA, Associate Dean (IRAA), Student Senate Representative (AA), as *well as* members with one/two external experts. The Standing Committee will make final recommendations to the Senate for approval of DAAs under different sub-categories.

Any person who has received a degree from the Institute is eligible to be considered for the Award, except an alumnus/alumna who is presently serving IIT (ISM) as an employee.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS AWARDS(2023)

Any person who has received a degree from the Institute is eligible to be considered for the Award, except an alumnus/alumna who is presently serving IIT (ISM) as an employee.
  • Young Achievers Award: This award is to be given to the individual who has shown outstanding achievements in their chosen field of work and is preferably below 40 years of age.
  • Entrepreneurship Award: This award is to be given to the individual who has shown outstanding achievements in entrepreneurship, business, and management fields. Award nominees will be evaluated against four main criteria:
    1. Demonstrated excellence in their fields.
    2. Demonstrated innovation, leadership and entrepreneurship.
    3. Demonstrated significant impact or contributions in their relevant fields.
    4. Capacity for innovation to contribute to a better society and economy of the country.
  • Research and Academic Excellence Award: This award is to be given to the individual who has achieved outstanding feats in the fields of Research and Academics. Due to their ongoing efforts and contributions to science and technology, the Institute recognizes their role in building a better tomorrow. The selection criteria for this awards shall include a reasonable combination of, but are not restricted to, the criteria below:
    1. A sustained record of research publications in peer-reviewed journals, research monographs, and/or research-oriented texts.
    2. Publication awards or other forms of honorary recognitions.
    3. Publications by others in the field that make substantial use of the nominee’s publications.
    4. Patterns of citation of the nominee’s work that make it clear that the work has had a substantial positive impact on the field.
    5. Grants and fellowships received over the course of the nominee’s career.
    6. Patents awarded
    7. Work that has had an influence beyond academia - this might include influences of the nominee’s work on such areas as public policy or professional/governmental/educational practices.
  • Bhaskar Bhattacharjee Memorial Award: This award recognizes excellence and work ethic of individuals in Mining and Mineral sectors, who are trying to achieve the high standards set by Late Bhaskar Bhattacharjee, the then Director-General of the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) and one of our distinguished alumnus. He drove innovation in professional staff contributions and fulfilled the goals, values, and mission of his organization. The award is to be conferred on the individuals who have given outstanding service to Mining and Mineral sectors, displayed outstanding teamwork and have exhibited the values to which IIT (ISM) Dhanbad aspires towards. The selection criteria for these awards shall include a reasonable combination of, but are not restricted to, the criteria below:
    1. Outstanding service to Mining and Mineral Sector which include: maintaining a consistently high quality of service to the work environment; effective stakeholder management; resolving a client issue or situation; inspiring others and serving as a role model with their actions, attitude, and behavior.
    2. Excellence in process improvement and/or innovation which include: taking a proactive and innovative approach toward finding solutions to business and workplace challenges.
    3. Exceptional leadership and/or vision.
    4. Exceptional teamwork or team contribution.
    5. Exemplary achievement in accomplishing a major task or project.
    6. Involvement beyond employment responsibilities.
  • Nagendra Kumar Memorial Award: This award recognizes the contributions of individuals who, with the knowledge and opportunities provided by the institute have achieved outstanding feats in their career but also have contributed to the alma mater. This contribution shall be significant and the opportunities so generated shall lead to the betterment of the college.
  • Director’s Award for Service to the Society:This award recognizes the contributions of the individual towards the betterment of society and the solving of socially oriented problems. Contributions should emphasize the awardee's concern for the common good, willingness to give time and comfort, and the ability to draw together varied resources to solve problems, rather than technical competence.
  • Jaswant Singh Gill Memorial Industrial Safety Excellence Award :
    Late Jaswant Sing Gill, an alumnus of 1965 batch of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, was a Braveheart Mining Engineer, who saved lives of 65 trapped miners due to inundation in the underground mine of Mahavir Colliery at Eastern Coalfields Limited on 13 November 1989. Shri Gill was a rescue trained person and designed a 2.5 m slim steel rescue capsule to pull the trapped miners out within a short period through a well-drilled precisely connecting the underground location of trapped miners from the surface. Shri Gill, as the additional chief engineer of the mine, volunteered himself to bring the miners back and went inside the inundated mine through drilled well and rescued the trapped miners in very adverse conditions.
    In recognition of his exemplary presence of mind and courage in saving the lives of miners in the Mining Industry, this award will be given in due recognition to an individual or team who has made a significant contribution towards the development of innovative processes and technologies for the improvement in workplace safety.
    The committee will review the following noteworthy accomplishments for the selection of the awardee from the available nomination:
    1. Evidence of Improving safety at the Workplace by an innovative process with an aim toward achieving a zero-accident potential in the associated Industry.
    2. Development of technology leading to significant improvement in workplace safety with a piece of evidence and justification on how the technology has resulted in a safe Workplace.
    3. The innovative process/technology development should be defined appropriately by the nominee supported with layout/drawing, and technical details.
    4. Safety track record of the organization for at least two years post-implementation of process/technology.
    5. At least one concise, descriptive letter of support that addresses innovative process/technology development aiming towards zero accident potential in the associated Industry.
